Adolescent Behavioral Sleep Medicine Services

Sleep Service Needs
Sleep is vital for optimal mental and physical health and cognitive performance. Adolescents are especially vulnerable to poor sleep due to their unique physiology and contextual demands associated with their developmental stage.
If your teen struggles with persistent difficulty falling and/or staying asleep, delayed sleep-wake schedule, anxiety at bedtime, difficulty rising, daytime sleepiness and/or fatigue, they may benefit from a course of behavioral sleep intervention.

Approach
We provide cognitive and behavioral sleep intervention to adolescents aged 12-17 years with insomnia, anxiety-related sleep disturbance, delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, and insufficient sleep.
Treatment approaches include cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and morning light therapy.
Parent/guardian involvement is often needed to support teen sleep management, but this varies depending on clinical need, age, and maturity level, and will be discussed at treatment outset.

Structure
Clinical services are provided on Tuesdays. Sessions are scheduled via videoconference- or in-person format pending feasibility.
Treatment begins with a 1-hour intake session with parent and child to learn more about your child’s sleep patterns and history.
Access to your child’s sleep schedule is important for understanding their sleep patterns and planning treatment. Your child will be asked to monitor sleep daily in the two weeks prior to treatment and during treatment using a sleep diary.
Treatment sessions last 1 hour and are tailored to your child’s individual needs based on collaborative conceptualization of their sleep problems.
Treatment duration ranges from 4 to 8 sessions, though this may be lengthened by psychiatric or family issues. Treatment begins with weekly sessions, which evolve to once every two weeks as symptoms improve.
